Tilicho Lake Trek

The Tilicho Lake Trek is a fantastic adventure for those who want to see stunning mountains and lakes. Tilicho Lake sits at a high altitude of 4919m, making it the highest lake in the world. It’s located in the Manang District of Nepal’s Annapurna region. The trek offers breathtaking views of mountains and follows a beautiful route.

The 18-day trek begins in Kathmandu, where you’ll visit UNESCO cultural heritage sites. Then, you’ll take a full-day drive to Chamje, where the trek starts. You’ll follow the Marsayangdi River trail, passing through villages like Tal, Dharapani, Chame, Pisang, Manang, Khangsar, and finally reaching Tilicho Lake. From Tilicho Lake, you have the option to cross the Moesokanta La pass to Jomsom instead of the Thorang La pass. However, you’ll need additional camping gear as there are no lodges in these areas.

After Tilicho Lake, the trek descends to Yak Kharka, Thorang Phedi, high camp, and eventually to Thorang-La pass. From there, you’ll enjoy views of the Dhaulagiri massif before trekking down to Muktinath, Kagbeni, and Jomsom. The trek concludes in Jomsom, where you’ll fly over the Kaligandaki River gorge, the deepest gorge in the world, to Pokhara.

The Tilicho Lake trek connects with the Annapurna Circuit route, one of Nepal’s most popular treks. Along the way, you’ll pass through the beautiful village of Manang, home to people from various ethnic groups and cultures. The scenery is breathtaking, with stunning mountains and picturesque hills.   • Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,300m)

    Upon your arrival in Nepal, a friendly representative will greet you at Tribhuvan International Airport. They will then escort you to your hotel where you will be staying overnight in Kathmandu.

  • Day 02: Kathmandu Sightseeing and trek preparation

    At around 9 am, we’ll embark on a sightseeing tour to explore some of Kathmandu’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Our itinerary includes visits to Boudhanath, Pashupatinath Temple, Kathmandu Durbar Square, and Swayambhunath (also known as the Monkey Temple). After exploring these cultural gems, we’ll return to the hotel. You’ll have some free time afterward to prepare for the upcoming trek.

  • Day 03: Drive to Chamje (1,410m): 6-7 hours

    We kick off the day bright and early with a drive to Chamje village, marking the beginning of our trek. Along the way, we’ll follow the Trishuli River and then the Marsyangdi River, treating ourselves to picturesque views of lush hills and settlements lining the highway. Keep an eye out for a stunning waterfall, adding to the allure of the journey. The lush greenery surrounding us will provide the perfect backdrop as we press forward with our trek. We’ll spend the night at a hotel in Chamje, gearing up for the adventures ahead.

  • Day 04: Trek from Chamje to Dharapani (1,960m): 5-6 hours

    After a hearty breakfast, we set out on our trek, soaking in the breathtaking vistas of towering hills, cascading waterfalls, deep gorges, snow-capped peaks, and charming settlements scattered along the way. As we cross the suspension bridge below Chamje, we descend to a serene grassy riverbank, following its course until we reach the village of Tal, marking the border of the Manang District. We’ll traverse the waterfall at Tal, then continue our ascent until we reach Dharapani. Tonight, we’ll rest and rejuvenate in Dharapani, preparing for the adventures that lie ahead.

  • Day 05: Trek from Dharapani to Chame (2,710m): 5-6 hours

    Today’s journey takes us through several forested ridges as we make our way to Chame, the administrative center of Manang District. The trail gradually ascends to Bagarchhap via Order, where we’ll traverse the Marshyangdi River multiple times while following its course until we reach Chame. Along the way, we’ll be treated to stunning views of Lamjung Himal, Annapurna II, and Annapurna IV (7,525m), providing us with ample opportunities to immerse ourselves in the beauty of the surrounding landscape. We’ll spend the night in Chame, resting and replenishing our energy for the adventures that await us.

  • Day 06: Trek from Chame to Pisang (3,300m) 5-6 hours

    Today’s trek leads us deeper into the forested path adorned with towering pine trees alongside the Marsyangdi River. Passing by numerous rivers and sparsely populated settlements, we’ll be treated to the first glimpse of the majestic Paungda Danda rock face, a striking curved rock formation soaring 1500m from the river below. This vantage point also offers breathtaking views of Annapurna II and Annapurna IV, providing us with a mesmerizing backdrop for our journey. Continuing onwards, the trail descends to Dhikur Pokhari before eventually arriving at Pisang. In the evening, we’ll have the opportunity to visit the Temple and Monastery in Pisang, where we can marvel at the magnificent vistas of Pisang peak (6091m) and other surrounding mountains. We’ll spend the night in Pisang, relishing the tranquility of our surroundings as we prepare for the adventures that lie ahead.

  • Day 07: Trek from Pisang to Manang (3,500m): 5-6 hours

    From Pisang, we embark on the route towards Manang, opting for the trail that leads us to Upper Pisang via Geru. This path treats us to exceptional vistas of the Annapurna range and Pisang Peak, offering us moments of awe-inspiring beauty throughout our journey. Along the way, we’ll have the opportunity to visit the Braga monastery, renowned as the largest monastery in the entire Manang district. The serene ambiance and spiritual aura of this sacred site will leave a lasting impression on our hearts. Continuing our trek, we press onward towards Manang, where we’ll spend the night, surrounded by the majestic mountains and tranquil landscapes of this enchanting region.

  • Day 08: Acclimatization day at Manang

    Today, we prioritize maintaining our physical well-being by engaging in a short hike to either Gangapurna Lake or Bhojo Gumpa, depending on our energy levels and preferences. For those feeling more adventurous and fit, an option to hike to Braga village is also available. Here, we can visit the Himalayan Rescue Association, where we can learn valuable information about Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), ensuring our safety and well-being during the trek. After a day of exploration and learning, we return to Manang for a peaceful overnight stay, rejuvenated and prepared for the adventures that lie ahead.

  • Day 09: Trek from Manang to Khangsar (3,745m): 2-3 hours

    Following breakfast, our trek proceeds towards the village of Khangsar. As we journey onward, the trail leads us through a picturesque gorge, with the majestic Tilicho Peak (7,134m) gradually coming into view on the horizon. Along the way, we pass through quaint settlements adorned with snow-capped peaks, and visit the serene Tore monastery. En route, we are treated to the mesmerizing sights of the Khangsar River, adding to the beauty of our trekking experience. Our day concludes as we arrive in Khangsar, where we settle in for a restful overnight stay, surrounded by the awe-inspiring landscapes of the Himalayas.

  • Day 10: Trek from Khangsar to Tilicho Base Camp (4,140m): 5-6 hours

    Leaving Kangsar behind, our journey takes us towards the Tilicho Lake Base Camp. Along the way, we traverse wide pasturelands where yaks graze peacefully, offering us a glimpse of the tranquil mountain life. As we ascend the hills, we are treated to breathtaking vistas of the surrounding valley, immersing ourselves in the natural beauty of the landscape. Descending down a steep slope, we finally reach the Tilicho Base Camp, where our accommodations consist of camping, as lodging options are limited in this remote area.   • Day 11: Visit Tilicho Lake (4,949m) then trek back to Base Camp: 5-6 hours

    Today, we embark on an unforgettable journey to the captivating Tilicho Lake. Beginning with a challenging ascent, we gradually make our way onto a moraine, navigating along the mountainside. Along the trail, we are greeted by awe-inspiring views of the Tilicho, Nilgiri, Khangsar, and Muktinath peaks, serving as constant reminders of the majestic beauty that surrounds us. After overcoming the demanding climb, we finally arrive at the enchanting Tilicho Lake, the highest lake in the world. Here, we are treated to the serene sight of its turquoise waters, sometimes adorned with reflections of the towering peaks, while at other times, frozen in stillness. Spending precious moments in the tranquil ambiance of the lake, we eventually make our way back to the Base Camp, cherishing the memories of our encounter with this natural wonder.   • Day 12: Trek from Tilicho Base Camp to Yak Kharka (4040m): 4-5 hours

    On our journey back from Tilicho Base Camp, we follow the trail that leads us through the picturesque Marshyangdi valley. As we bid farewell to the lush greenery of the forested area, we enter into a landscape adorned with sparse vegetation. Continuing our trek, we pass through the historic Khangsar village before ascending alongside the Thorang Khola. Along the way, we encounter a long Mani wall and traverse through scenic meadows where yaks graze peacefully. Our path eventually leads us to a temporary settlement used by yak herders, known as Yak Kharka. Here, we are treated to breathtaking vistas of majestic peaks such as Tilicho Peak (7134m), Khatungkang (6484m), and Chulu (6584m), creating a truly awe-inspiring backdrop for our stay at Yak Kharka. Overnight accommodation will be provided at Yak Kharka.

  • Day 13: Trek from Yak Kharka to Thorang Phedi: (4420m) 3-4 hours

    Leaving Yak Kharka behind, today’s journey involves an uphill trek to Thorang Phedi. As we set out on our path, we first cross a suspension bridge before reaching the quaint Ledar village. Throughout the trek, we are treated to continuous views of the towering peaks that surround us. Passing through imposing cliffs, we eventually arrive at Thorang Phedi. Along the way, we are rewarded with breathtaking vistas of prominent peaks such as Thorang Peak (6,144m), Syagang (6,026m), Khatungkang (6,484m), and Purbung Himal (6,590m). The term “Phedi” in Nepali refers to the foot of the mountain, making Thorang Phedi our base as we prepare for the ascent ahead. Overnight accommodation will be provided at Thorang Phedi.

  • Day 14: Trek from Thorang Phedi to Muktinath (3,800m) via Thorang-La pass (5,416m): 7-8 hours

    Today’s trek starts early in the morning as we embark on the challenging journey of crossing one of Nepal’s highest passes, Thorang-La Pass (5,416m). This pass connects the districts of Manang and Mustang, offering stunning views along the way. The climb to Thorang-La Pass is demanding, requiring us to traverse over moraines and icy paths. However, once we reach the summit, the breathtaking scenery makes the effort worthwhile. We’ll have the opportunity to capture some memorable photos before descending to the serene Muktinath Valley located at the foot of Thorang-La Pass. Overnight accommodation will be provided in Muktinath, allowing us to rest and rejuvenate after the exhilarating trek.

  • Day 15: Trek from Muktinath to Jomsom (2,715m): 5-6 hours

    In the early morning, we’ll visit the revered Muktinath Temple, a significant pilgrimage site for both Hindu and Buddhist devotees. The temple features water spouts that channel fresh water from streams above, adding to its spiritual significance. After our visit, we’ll begin our trek to Jomsom. Along the way, we’ll pass through Kagbeni, renowned for its lush apple orchards and adorned with chortens, or memorial stupas. Continuing along the trail, we’ll follow the riverbed of the Kaligandaki River, experiencing the gusty winds characteristic of the area while enjoying breathtaking views of Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167m) and other snow-capped peaks. We’ll spend the night in Jomsom, where we can relax and reflect on our journey.

  • Day 16: Fly from Jomsom to Pokhara (823m): 30mins

    After enjoying breakfast in Jomsom, we’ll embark on a breathtaking flight back to Pokhara. The flight offers stunning views of the majestic Dhaulagiri and Annapurna mountain ranges as we soar over the deepest gorge in the world, the Kaligandaki River. Upon landing in Pokhara, we’ll have the opportunity to unwind with a peaceful boat ride on the serene waters of Phewa Lake, where the majestic peaks of Annapurna and Fishtail are reflected in the calm waters. In the evening, we can leisurely stroll around the lakeside area, soaking in the charming ambiance of Pokhara. We’ll spend the night in Pokhara, reflecting on the incredible experiences of our journey.

  • Day 17: Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu: 7 hours

    We’ll start our day with an early morning breakfast at the hotel in Pokhara before catching a tourist bus back to Kathmandu. The scenic journey takes approximately 7 hours, offering glimpses of Nepal’s diverse landscapes along the way. In the evening, we’ll gather for a special farewell dinner hosted by Danphe Adventure to commemorate the successful completion of our memorable journey. It’s a time to reflect on the incredible experiences we’ve shared and the bonds we’ve formed. We’ll spend our final night in Kathmandu, cherishing the memories of our adventure in the Himalayas.

  • Day 18: Final departure

    Our representative will ensure you arrive at the airport in good time for your next flight, departing approximately 3 hours before your scheduled departure. They’ll assist you with any necessary arrangements and ensure a smooth transition as you bid farewell to Nepal and embark on your onward journey.

  • What are the visa requirements?

    Currently, all the foreign nationalities (except Indians) require a visa to enter Nepal. Visas are obtainable from embassies abroad or on arrival at Kathmandu’s Airport. If getting the visa at the airport be prepared for long queues. You will also need to provide one passport photo and the $50 USD fee for 30 days.

  • What are the physical requirements for Tilicho Lake Trek?

    Tilicho Lake Trek requires you to trek at an altitude of maximum 4919m and up to 5- 7 hours per day, with a small 5-7kg bag. We recommended you to train with long hikes and/or a sport of your choice (e.g. jogging).

  • How old do I need to be?

    There is no age restriction for doing this trip, but if you are under 16 it will better to trek with your parents. You must be health-conscious during the trek.

  • What is the accommodation like?

    You will stay in the Hotel while you are in the city of Kathmandu, which is like a 3-star category. The hotel has access to showers and intermittent internet.

    But while you are in trekking Tea House/lodges are the place where you spend the night during the trek, which is very basic. The room is pretty small with twin sharing and a common washroom. Some places have squat style toilets, whilst others have a western style. Shower does not always offer warm water and most teahouses will charge you for use of a hot shower.

  • Which meals are included?

    Meals will be served as per the menu of the teahouse/lodges. Where you can find a variety of dishes like Indian, Nepalese, Tibetan, Continental, etc, to choose. Tea, coffee, bakery items, snacks, bars eggs, etc can also be found easily.

  • What currency should I take?

    The currency used in Nepal is Nepalese Rupees (NPR). You are unable to get NPR outside of Nepal and therefore you will need to exchange money in Kathmandu. The easiest currency to exchange is USD and Euro. You can also withdraw NPR from the ATM but check with your bank about the relevant charges to do this.

  • Is there any Bank or ATM facility during Tilicho Lake Trek?

    Yes, there is a good facility of bank and ATM in Pokhara and Jomsom.

  • What kind of problems can arise at a higher altitude during Tilicho Lake Trek?

    There is a huge change of AMS problem i.e. Acute Mountain Sickness problem. It may cause some problems as you trek higher above 3500-meter altitude (11,482 ft.). But don’t worry about that. We have carefully designed our Tilicho Lake trek itinerary with sufficient time for acclimatization and less walking time each day. And our experienced trek guide will be helping you with it.

  • Do I need insurance before the Tilicho Lake Trek?

    Yes, you need to be insured before the adventure trekking in Nepal from your home country. However, we will be always with you taking care of throughout the whole Tilicho lake trek.

    Tilicho Lake Trek is possible for the whole year, but the best time to doing this trek is spring season (March to May) and autumn season (September to November).
